Pavers in Lafayette, CA
Lafayette paver projects are mostly about slope: patios cut into hillsides, steps between levels and drainage that carries water around the house. Plan around protected oaks (tree ordinance), and if you are replacing lawn with EBMUD's rebate, the new patio must be permeable (EBMUD).
Patios and steps on sloped lots
Many Lafayette lots fall away from the house or climb behind it, so a flat patio usually means cutting into the hill, building up one side, or splitting the space into two levels joined by steps. Each choice changes the price: cut soil has to be hauled away, fill has to be compacted in lifts, and steps need consistent risers. Once a slope needs a wall that actually holds back soil, that part becomes a retaining-wall project with its own engineering and permit questions.
Drainage comes first on a hillside
Water coming down the hill will find the patio. A paver patio should slope at least 1.5% (ICPI) away from the house, with a plan for where the water lands: a swale, a drain or a planting bed. Permeable pavers can take some of the load if the soil underneath drains.
Protected trees
Lafayette's tree protection ordinance took effect January 9, 2025. It protects, among others, indigenous species (oak, bay, buckeye, madrone) with a 12-inch trunk on developed property and native trees of any size in restricted ridgeline areas; removing, destroying or excessively pruning a protected tree needs a Tree Permit (City of Lafayette). A paver base means excavating 6–10 in below grade, which can cut roots, so lay out the patio with the tree's root zone in mind.

Orinda and Moraga
Requests from neighboring Orinda and Moraga look similar: steep, wooded lots, steps and drainage. Each has its own planning and building rules, so check with that town rather than assuming Lafayette's apply.
What it costs
National patio pricing runs $10–$17+ per sq ft and dry-laid flagstone $15–$32+ (HomeGuide; HomeGuide). Hillside access, steps and hauling soil typically push Lafayette jobs above flat-lot numbers. Full cost guide.

FAQ
Lafayette questions
Do I need a permit for a paver patio in Lafayette?
Lafayette runs its own building division, separate from Walnut Creek's. Check with the City of Lafayette before work starts, especially for steps, walls or grading on a slope, and for any work at the street.
Can I build a patio under an oak tree in Lafayette?
Carefully. Lafayette's tree protection ordinance (effective January 9, 2025) protects, among others, indigenous oaks, bays, buckeyes and madrones with a 12-inch trunk on developed property, and a Tree Permit is required to remove, destroy or excessively prune a protected tree (City of Lafayette). Digging a base through a root zone can damage a tree, so get an arborist's input before excavating near one.
