What moves the price
- Demolition and haul-off. Removing an old concrete driveway runs $2–$6+ per sq ft (HomeGuide). Lawn or dirt is cheaper to clear.
- Base depth. ICPI calls for at least 4 in of compacted base under patios and 6 in under residential driveways on well-drained soil; wet or weak soils need more (Tech Spec 2). More base means more excavation, stone and compaction.
- Access. A side yard too narrow for a skid steer means hand-carting base rock and pavers, which adds days of labor.
- Slope and steps. Hillside lots in Walnut Creek and Lafayette often need steps, low walls or extra drainage. Walls taller than a seat wall are a separate retaining-wall job.
- Pattern, borders and cuts. Herringbone and curves mean more cut pieces than running bond on a rectangle; contrasting borders add material and labor.
- Material. Concrete pavers sit at the low end; travertine, flagstone and porcelain at the high end.
- Drainage. Drains, permeable sections or regrading to send water away from the house.
- Permits. No city permit for private flatwork in Walnut Creek, but a new driveway approach needs an encroachment permit and its fees (City FAQ).
After it's built: sealing and upkeep
Sealing is optional on most concrete pavers. Angi lists cleaning and sealing at $1–$3+ per sq ft, around $300–$550+ for a 200 sq ft patio; solvent-based sealers last up to about five years and water-based around two (Angi). Topping up joint sand is a small, recurring job. Permeable systems need vacuum sweeping instead of sealing; HomeGuide puts that at $100–$500+ a year (HomeGuide).
How to compare paver bids
Line up the bids on the same items before comparing totals: base depth after compaction, base material, geotextile, bedding sand, paver product and thickness, edge restraint type, joint sand, demolition and haul-off, drainage, the encroachment permit if the approach changes, warranty and payment schedule. A low bid usually saves money on the base. Full bid checklist.

FAQ
Cost questions
How much does a 12×12 paver patio cost?
144 sq ft at HomeGuide's $10–$17+ per sq ft is about $1,440–$2,450+. HomeGuide's own 12×12 example is $1,400–$2,500+. Small patios carry a higher share of fixed costs (mobilization, edge restraint, cuts), so per-foot pricing tends to rise on tiny jobs.
How much does it cost to put pavers on 2,000 square feet?
At $10–$30+ per sq ft, 2,000 sq ft is roughly $20,000–$60,000+. Larger areas spread fixed costs, but a driveway that size usually means removing old concrete ($2–$6+ per sq ft) and a deeper base.
How much does paver sealing cost?
Angi puts paver cleaning and sealing at $1–$3+ per sq ft, with most projects around $300–$550+ for a 200 sq ft patio. Solvent-based sealers last up to about five years and water-based around two. Permeable pavers are not normally sealed.
Why are Bay Area paver quotes higher than national averages?
National cost sites average many markets. Bay Area labor, hauling, dump fees and equipment access on hillside lots all push local prices up, which is why a Bay Area contractor's published $20–$30+ per sq ft driveway range sits at the top of the national band.
