Heat and slip: what to look for
Summer afternoons in Walnut Creek, Danville and Alamo regularly get hot, and bare feet notice. Light colors reflect more sun; HomeGuide notes travertine stays 20%–30% cooler than concrete in direct sunlight, and that tumbled and brushed travertine keeps good slip resistance even when wet (HomeGuide). Whatever you choose, ask for the manufacturer's slip-resistance data for wet areas and avoid polished faces.
| Option | Installed (national) | Feel and grip | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Travertine (tumbled/brushed) | $13–$30+ /sq ft | Cooler, textured, natural look | Needs sealing every 2–3 years; softer stone chips |
| Concrete pavers (light, textured) | $12–$25+ /sq ft | Wide choice; good grip with texture | Dark colors get hot |
| Porcelain (outdoor, textured) | $12–$20+ /sq ft | Stain-resistant, crisp modern look | Must be rated for wet areas |
The coping edge comes first
Coping is the cap along the pool's edge. Bullnose travertine or paver coping can be matched to the deck, but replacing coping touches the pool shell and tile line, so it is often coordinated with any resurfacing. If the pool itself needs plaster, tile or structural work, plan that before the deck goes down.
Drainage away from the pool
Deck water should run away from the pool and away from the house, toward planting areas, a deck drain or the yard. Pavers on a compacted base with a slope of at least 1.5% (ICPI's minimum) shed water well, and the joints let a little soak in. Water that runs under the deck toward the shell, or ponds against the coping, is a sign the base is wrong.
Replacing a cracked concrete deck
Older poured-concrete pool decks are often cracked, stained or lifted by roots. Options are full removal and a new paver deck on a proper base, or, if the slab is sound and level, a thin overlay of pavers. Overlays raise the surface, so check heights at doors, gates and the coping before choosing that route.

FAQ
Pool deck questions
How much does a paver pool deck cost?
HomeGuide lists pool deck pavers at $12–$25+ per sq ft, or roughly $5,000–$20,000+ for a typical deck, and travertine pool decks at $13–$30+ per sq ft (HomeGuide; HomeGuide travertine). Removing an old concrete deck adds demolition.
What are the best pavers for a pool deck?
Look for a textured, slip-resistant surface and a light color. Tumbled or brushed travertine is the classic choice: HomeGuide notes it stays 20%–30% cooler than concrete in direct sun and keeps good grip when wet. Light concrete pavers with a textured face and porcelain rated for wet areas are the other common options.
Can you lay pavers on dirt?
Not directly on native soil if you want them to stay flat. Pavers need a compacted aggregate base (4 in minimum for foot traffic per ICPI) and a bedding layer. Laid on dirt, they rock, sink and grow weeds within a season or two. How the base works.
